A Special Mental Health Awareness Month Panel Discussion

Trauma is not always visible, but its effects are real. Whether caused by abuse, violence, an accident, loss or neglect, trauma can have deep and lasting effects on our mental and emotional well-being.

But that’s not all… Secondary trauma, the stress experienced by individuals due to exposure to the traumatic experiences of others, even if they weren’t directly involved in the event, can lead to symptoms like those of PTSD and change how they see the world.

Approximately 6.8% of adults in the U.S. have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives, per the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI.)

Trauma can lead to anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mental health conditions. It can affect relationships, daily functioning and an individual’s self-worth. Symptoms may appear immediately or years later and often go unrecognized.

However, healing is possible. With the right support, people can recover, grow and thrive. Therapy, peer support and trauma-informed care can make all the difference.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, join South Texas Health System Behavioral for an enlightening discussion on how trauma influences mental health across the lifespan. Learn more about the common trauma responses and signs of post-traumatic stress, long-term health implications and approaches to support healing and resilience.
